"I feel particularly called to work with gay men and women, and want to help people committed to a life of greater authenticity," he said.
He became interested in counseling gay people while working on his Ph.D. dissertation in clinical psychology at Union Institute in Cincinnati.
"My dissertation was on the spiritual awakening of the 'coming-out' process," he said. "My spiritual awakening occurred when I was in the coming out process. That is really the work I am called to do—to help people transition in a spiritual way by honoring their souls vs. feeling that coming out is this horrible thing. Unfortunately, our culture negates gay people, in general, and the belief that there can be a spiritual mission for any gay person."

When working with people who are in the coming out process, Dr. Huber first helps a patient examine his/her family's cultural and religious background.
"Some families have strong religious connections and so a gay person gets kicked out of the home," he said. "We look at that together and the person tries to make a decision-do I want to still celebrate with my family or community, and can I integrate my sexual identity into that role? It really depends on where you were born and how you were raised. But many people don't feel included. It actually becomes a search-who am I spiritually and how do I choose to celebrate it?
"I remind my clients that identity is greater than your body, emotions or sexual orientation," he added. "These are significant stages of development to integrate.”
